With over four thousand students, the UniversitŠt der Kźnste Berlin is the largest university of the arts in Germany. It consists of two institutions with long traditions: the Hochschule fźr Bildende Kźnste, dating back to the Prussian Academy of Fine Arts, founded in 1696, and the Hochschule fźr Musik, established in 1869. Today the UniversitŠt encompasses practically all disciplines of the arts including fine arts, visual arts, design, architecture, music and the performing arts plus teachers' education for all school levels in fine arts and music. The School is unique in Germany in its broad disciplinary scope and in its character as a university-type wissenschaftliche und kźnstlerische Hochschule. It has the right to confer doctoral degrees in art theory and art history, in musicology, architecture and education. As of 1999, 14.9 percent of the HdK's students are from abroad. It is organized in five Schools or colleges (FakultŠten): Fine Arts (Bildende Kunst), Design and Architecture (Gestaltung), Music (Musik), Performing Arts (Darstellende Kunst) and Education and Social Sciences (Erziehungs- und Gesellschaftswissenschaften). Libraries, workshops and other facilities including studios and practice rooms are open throughout the year. The Office of International Relations is responsible for organizing the Schools' international cooperation activities which include the exchange of students and teachers and joint projects. Persons from abroad studying or wishing to study at the HdK on an individual basis are assisted by the Office of International Student Services (Auslandsamt). European students can also arrange exchanges through the ERASMUS/SOCRATES program. The School of Music offers eleven programs, including music training in orchestral and historical Instruments (Orchesterreife - 8 semesters, and Postgraduate "Zusatzstudium" - 4 semesters).
